Grants

Grants provide funding to students to supplement the cost of education and do not have to be paid back. Grants come from a variety of sources such as the Federal and State governments and organizations and agencies. These awards are often based upon a student's financial need, enrollment status and academic achievements. However, there may be special criteria.

How to apply: Submitting the FAFSA is your application for federal and state grants. The financial aid team reviews your eligibility upon receipt of your FAFSA information. 

Federal Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grant funds are for undergraduate students who are pursuing their first bachelor's degree. This is a federal grant with the purpose of providing educational assistance to students with the greatest financial need. The award is prorated based upon enrollment status (full-time=12 or more hours; 3/4 time=9-11 hours; 1/2 time=6-8 hours; less than 1/2 time=1-5 hours).

  • Federally funded.
  • Eligible students are undergraduate students who do not have a bachelor's degree.
  • Eligibility is determined through the FAFSA.
  • The maximum award is set annually.
  • The award will be adjusted throughout the first three weeks of the semester should the student's enrolled hours increase or decrease.
  • Students are limited to 12 full-time semesters (or its equivalent) of Federal Pell Grant awards.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant funds are for undergraduate students who are pursuing their first bachelor's degree. This is a federal grant and is based on financial need.

  • Federally funded.
  • Eligible students are undergraduate students who do not have a bachelors' degree and who are Pell Grant recipients.
  • Eligibility is determined through the FAFSA.
  • Award amounts are determined by Allen College based upon the amount of funding available for that year.
  • Awards typically range from $200-$500 a semester.
Iowa Tuition Grant

The Iowa Tuition Grant is for undergraduate Iowa residents who attend private institutions of higher education. The award amount is based on the number of credits enrolled. The award amounts will be adjusted throughout the first three weeks of the semester should the student's enrolled credits increase or decrease. 

  • Funded by the State of Iowa.
  • Eligible students are undergraduate students who are Iowa residents.
  • Eligibility is determined through the student's FAFSA.
  • Award amounts are determined by the Iowa College Aid.*
  • Students are limited to eight (8) full-time semesters of Iowa Tuition Grant awards.

*In the event that available state funds are insufficient to pay the full amount of each approved grant, the Iowa College Student Aid Commission has the authority to administratively reduce the award.

Future Ready Iowa Last Dollar Scholar Grant

Allen College's Associate of Science in Radiography (ASR) program is approved to participate in the Future Ready Iowa Last Dollar Scholar (LDS) program.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • File FAFSA by July 1 prior to year of attendance.
  • Must enroll at least half-time in ASR program.
  • Must be an Iowa resident.
  • Must have an EFC at or below $20,000.

Applying for the Award:

  • Students must apply annually for the Last-Dollar Scholarship.
  • To apply, complete the FAFSA before July 15 of the academic year they plan to attend.
  • The financial aid team will automatically determine whether a student qualifies for the award.

Calculating the Award:

  • Take the average community college amount of tuition and institution-wide mandatory fees minus federal and state non-repayable aid (grants and scholarships).
  • For 2023-2024, the maximum award amount is $2,473 with a minimum award amount of $250 per semester with full-time enrollment.
