Allen College Students Serve and Learn in Chicago

WATERLOO, Iowa — On Sunday, May 22, 2011, 18 Allen College BSN students and faculty members Mary Brown, Dr. Anna Weepie and Kathi Eggleston traveled to Chicago for a four-day experience serving and learning about vulnerable populations in the Chicago metro area. During the four days, the students:
- Provided direct service to refugees and immigrants served by the Refugee and Immigrant Community Services of the Heartland Alliance. Activities included setting up items for the refugees and immigrants to furnish their apartments. Students also assisted
refugees and immigrants to complete job applications at a local Target store; - Served dinner for homeless men at the “soup kitchen” at Humboldt Park Social Services;
- Worked with Hispanic children in three different classrooms at an after-school program at Casa Central;
- Learned about the role of the nurse, care provided, and populations served at the school health centers of Crane and Orr High Schools;
- Performed general landscaping and clean-up at Deborah’s Place; and
- Toured several inpatient units at Rush University Medical Center.
The Allen College students also had time for relaxation while in the Windy City. They hosted an Alumni Dinner at Capi’s Italian Kitchen on Navy Pier; enjoyed blues music at Kingston Mines; attended a Chicago Cub’s game; and visited the Museum of Science and Industry where they toured the BodyWorld Exhibit and watched “Tornado Alley” in the Omnimax theater.
