Allen College Celebrates Men's Contributions to Nursing

April 14, 2011

altAllen College hosted a celebration of men’s contributions to nursing at a dinner held on April 14 in the College’s McKinstry Student Lounge.  Thirty-five men who are registered nurses or nursing students attended the event that featured a presentation by Dr. James Raper entitled “Personal Reflections of Strategic Planning for a Successful Career in Nursing.”  Dr. Raper is an associate professor of Medicine and Nursing; the Director of the HIV Outpatient, research and Dental Clinics; a Scientist in the Center for AIDS Research; and a scholar in the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Students from Allen College, Kirkwood Community College, and the University of Iowa College of Nursing attended the event which was hosted by Allen College’s Office of Diversity Services.  Allen Faculty members Doreen Mingo, Adisa Kudumovic, and Dr. Andrea Addington also attended the celebration.    An important outcome of the event was a decision to establish an Iowa chapter of the American Assemble for Men in Nursing (AAMN).  This planning effort will be led by Allen College Chancellor  Jerry Durham, PhD, RN, FAAN,  and Todd Ingram, MA, RN, a faculty member at the University of Iowa College of Nursing.
