Allen College Receives Federal Grants

July 28, 2010

WATERLOO, Iowa—Allen College chancellor Dr. Jerry Durham has announced that the College has received five federal grants totaling $409,000.  The grants are from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) which provides funds to support disadvantaged students, to support graduate students preparing for careers as nurse educators, and to assist the College in extending the acute care and psychiatric nursing tracks of the MSN program to distant learners. Some of the grants were funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The funds for disadvantaged students will give scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds with financial need, many of whom are underrepresented minorities. The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) funds will provide low-interest loans to graduate students who want to teach nursing as incentive for nurses to select careers as nurse educators.  Graduates who receive NFLP funds can have 85 percent of their loan forgiven if they teach full time in a nursing program following graduation.

Allen College is one of five Iowa colleges and universities to receive funds to support nursing students.  According to U.S. Senator Tom Harkin in a July 1 news release, “Today’s funding is a double win for the state of Iowa. First, it will help provide job training to Iowans to keep our workforce competitive, bring good jobs to our state and boost our economy. On top of this, the funding will improve the quality of our health professionals, helping ensure that anyone who seeks medical assistance will receive quality care.  I am also pleased that this funding will provide scholarships for disadvantaged students who may never have otherwise had the opportunity to pursue a career in medicine and earn a good paycheck to support their families. This is truly helping to support the American dream.”

Offering nursing education since 1925, Allen College became a degree-granting institution in 1989. Allen College offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Associate of Science in Radiography (ASR) and Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHS) programs.
