Allen College Holds Spring Commencement

alt      Allen College conferred 15 Associate of Science in Radiography degrees, 58 Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees and 32 Master of Science of Nursing degrees (6 of the MSN graduates were the first graduates from the new Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (APMHNP) track.  Allen College also conferred degrees in the new Bachelor of Health Science programs.  Three students earned this degree, majoring in Nuclear Medicine Technology. 

altDr. Michael D. Ward, Ph.D., associate dean for student programs and a professor at the Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College in St. Louis, MO, was the commencement speaker.  Dr. Ward, a Registered Technologist, Radiography (RTR) and a Fellow of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (FASRT), served as a consultant to Allen College in the design of its health science program.  The first students to graduate from that program received their Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHS) diploma at the commencement ceremony.

      The following graduates were recognized for their awards and honors during Spring graduation activities. 

Presidential Awards

      Each year Presidential Awards are given for excellence in academics to students in the Associate of Science in Radiography and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs who are graduating with the highest cumulative grade points.

        Associate of Science in Radiography Program recipient: Leah Oppermann

        Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program recipient:  Melissa Oltman, RN

Jane E. Hasek Excellence in Nursing Award

      The nursing faculty of Allen College select the graduate who best incorporates the values and beliefs of the mission and philosophy of Allen College in his/her professional and personal life.  This award was named in recognition of the first Chancellor of Allen College, Dr. Jane Hasek, for her visionary leadership in the establishment of the College. The 2010 recipient of the Jane E. Hasek, Excellence in Nursing Award was Mandy Husz.

Dr. John F. Maughan Honorary Award

      The Dr. John F. Maughan Honorary Award was established in 2000 by the Cedar Valley Medical Specialists Radiologists and is presented annually to a radiography graduate in honor of Dr. John F. Maughan.  Dr. Maughan was Medical Advisor of the radiography program from 1984-1996 providing guidance and leadership. He served as a role model for others as an outstanding clinical practitioner and demonstrated characteristics that reflect the highest professional radiological standards.  The recipient is selected based on characteristics of excellence as demonstrated by leadership, characteristics that reflect the highest professional radiography standards, and academic excellence.  The 2010 recipient was Kyle Morris.

Allen College Service Award

      Selection of the Allen College Service Award is made by the Allen College faculty for students who have provided outstanding service to the College and as ambassadors in the community, demonstrated a strong commitment to the core values espoused in the College philosophy.  Recipients of the 2010 Allen College Service Awards were:
