Allen College Institutional Review Board
Training for Human Subjects Protections

Training Requirements

All key personnel listed on forms submitted to the Allen College Institutional Review Board (ACIRB) on the Application for Review (or Application for Exempt Review) form must complete training on human subjects protections before a protocol will be reviewed.  Data collection and contact with human subjects cannot start until written approval is received from the ACIRB.

Key personnel include the principal investigator, co-principal investigators, supervising faculty member, and any other individuals who will have contact with the participants or the participants’ data (e.g., interviewers, transcribers, coders, etc.).

All key personnel must complete human subjects protections training.  Certificates of completion of an approved training course must be submitted to the ACIRB as part of the necessary documentation included with the application for review unless the certificate of any of these people is already on file with the ACIRB.

Certifications of completion of an appropriate course from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are accepted.  Certification of training from other sources may be submitted and will be evaluated by the ACIRB for adequacy and appropriateness on an individual basis.

Training certificates are honored for a five year period beginning on the date that the training was completed (not on the date of submission to the ACIRB).  The date training was completed can be found on the certificate of training given by NIH after the course is successfully completed.  Once the 5 year anniversary date is reached, the PI must complete a new human subjects protection training course and submit evidence of successful course completion to the ACIRB in order for a proposal to be reviewed.
